WONDERS OF HOPE | LOCAL ROOTS WITH A GLOBAL IMPACT
The results are remarkable. Yet, challenges remain. In late 2019, a single donation covered every Gifted Hands teacher ' s salary in full for the year, many being paid on a schedule for the first time. Then the pandemic hit. Overnight, schools closed and incomes disappeared. However, donors continued to give, keeping the teachers paid. Later, they funded the purchase of thermometer guns and water tanks needed to safely reopen exam classes under new health rules. The school charges just $ 10 a month per child today. Yet, that ' s more than a fifth of many families ' total income. Keeping experienced staff is difficult, with average pay between $ 150 and $ 200 per month, and many teachers not paid year-round. The work is far from finished, but creating brighter futures is their business.
The program works to expand what kids in Kibera believe is possible for their own lives. Sponsored children have taken van trips to the museum in Nairobi, providing them with a full day out of the slum. Teenagers have attended multi-day camps and island excursions on Lake Victoria, often a child ' s first glimpse of a world beyond Kibera. Kids are often so worn out from the excitement, organizers say, that they fall asleep on the ride home. Annie believes that children exposed to greater horizons, equipped and empowered, can become the authors of their own lives.
It ' s a need that isn ' t unique to Kibera. A 2026 UC Santa Cruz study, published in the journal Nature Communications, found that even along California ' s own coastline, proximity doesn ' t guarantee access. Researchers surveying Central Coast communities found that lower-income families report far more barriers to ever reaching the beach, no matter how close they live to it. Poverty of opportunity doesn ' t look the same everywhere. Yet, at the core, the remedy is familiar to those who mentor youth: show a child there ' s more to the world than what ' s immediately in front of them, and you ' ve just handed them a pen.
