Roast Beef found herself in our favorite area over the hill and by the sea recently. Popping into Santa Cruz en route to her“ secret beach hideaway,” where she takes Mom and Dad for their much-needed“ sanity breaks,” the Beefer had to pop in and grab a supply of Verve Coffee. While the beach is Roasty’ s favorite place to be, she’ s equally happy trapsing around South County. Check out our updated list of things to do right here in our own backyard on page 28. It ' s Roast Beef approved!
The holiday season is a time for celebration— filled with festive lights, holiday cheer, and timeless traditions. It’ s also a time for reflection. When we look around, one thing is clear: our community shines brightly because of those who work tirelessly to make it a better place.
Every December, the south county comes alive with countless acts of kindness. Armies of our neighbors step up to serve through faith communities, youth groups, nonprofits, and service groups. Volunteers from all walks of life dedicate their time and energy, helping others in countless ways. The impact is remarkable, and their work deserves to be celebrated.
While local nonprofits operate year-round to support families, children, seniors, and individuals facing hardships, they expand their efforts during the holidays to meet increased needs in truly inspiring ways. From food programs to mental health services, our nonprofits provide a safety net. Blankets, warm coats, hygiene kits, and essential supplies— items that seem so simple yet mean so much when received by someone in need – are distributed in record numbers.
Friends and neighbors volunteer at toy drives so local kids can experience a joyful Christmas morning. Others help prepare Christmas tree donations so local families can decorate their homes and create memories that will last a lifetime. Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner distribution drives— made possible by community members who volunteer, organize and generously donate— bring comfort and connection to hundreds of households. These acts of kindness don’ t just support basic needs; they restore hope, dignity, and a sense of belonging for our neighbors in need.
And then there are the quiet helpers, those who serve behind the scenes whose actions impact our community in profound ways. The neighbor who checks in on a senior living alone. The teacher who makes sure every child in their classroom has food and warm clothing. The mom and dad who model service above self for their children. Our youth— who could be doing anything else— but choose to help. The local businessperson who funds a movement. These are our neighbors who embody the spirit of the season, reminding us that kindness comes in many forms— and only requires a giving heart.
What makes our community amazing is not just the number of programs that exist, but the spirit behind them. We are surrounded by individuals and organizations who believe that when one of us thrives, we all thrive. That belief turns compassion into action and challenges into solutions. It is the foundation of every act of service, big or small.
As we look ahead to the new year, it is critical that we carry this spirit forward. The economy has long been showing signs of stress, prices for food and basic supplies are at an all-time high, and many industries we rely on for our livelihoods are slowing down. If you are able, please continue to support nonprofits like South County Community Services( formerly Saint Joseph’ s Family Services), Community Solutions, Rebekah Children’ s Services, and others who provide critical safety net services. After the holidays these nonprofits need donations and volunteers more than ever. Yet, it’ s also when donations slow down dramatically and volunteers are harder to find. The work of our nonprofits, service clubs, community groups, and everyday volunteers never ends— and neither does the difference they make. Let’ s remember to continue to support them!
To every person who has donated, volunteered, organized, encouraged, cooked, delivered, or simply shown kindness: thank you. You are the heartbeat of our community. Your generosity does more than merely meet the needs of others. It inspires hope.
We wish you a wonderful Christmas season and a New Year filled with health, joy, and renewed purpose. May the months ahead bring opportunities to grow, give, and celebrate the incredible community we are blessed to call home.
Let’ s go make history … together.
