Bike Maps
O
nce upon a time, bike maps were
treasured, well-worn paper maps
or word-of-mouth information.
Today with GPS, the Internet and Google
maps the choices are infinite and not paper-
based. One of the Internet bike-mapping
programs, MapMyRide.com, lists 6,039
rides in and around Morgan Hill, and
5,072 rides in and around Gilroy. The
setup of these Internet mapping programs
is based on bike riders’ participation. Riders
record their rides with GPS and load them
into the program.
One way or another everyone has some
experience with Google Maps. But did you
know that there is a bike option in Google
Maps? Click on the bike option in Google
Maps and a maze of rides/trails pops up
all over the maps of Gilroy and Morgan
Hill. Again, bike riders submit their rides
to Google Maps. Google even has a bike
sharing world map.
According to About.com, the six best
route-mapping websites are:
•
•
•
•
•
•
ridewithgps.com
mapmyride.com
bikely.com
gmap-pedometer.com
veloroutes.org/bikemaps/
routeslip.com
Beyond these six websites there are many
more general websites and apps. There are
also websites for a particular area, including
Gilroy and Morgan Hill. Both cities have a
bicycle program within city governance.

Gilroy
Bicycle Pedestrian Commission
— cityofgilroy.org.
Morgan Hill
Alternative Transportation, Bicycle Master
Plan — morgan-hill.ca.gov/439/Bicycling
Both communities have official bike
maps. Morgan Hill’s map is very extensive
with seven separate sector maps. Even VTA
(Valley Transportation Agency) has a map
highlighting rides around Morgan Hill and
Gilroy.
The old worn-out paper maps might
be a thing of the past but biking today is
going strong — and is more interesting
with these new mapping technologies.
