FROM THE EDITOR
W
e are having way too much fun putting this magazine together. How
does that saying go: “ if you do what you love, you will love what you
do?” Personally I like Henry David Thoreau’s take on it — “Do what you
love. Know your own bone, gnaw at it, bury it, unearth it and gnaw on it still.”
That’s kinda what we do. We love putting this magazine together and we take
pride in providing a quality publication to be enjoyed (our bone), we are always
considering ways to improve it (our gnaw), we ponder how the improvement will
be received (our burying it) — we revisit it (unearthing it) and then we make the
change and consider the next idea (gnawing on it still). Sometimes they stick and
become part of our continued love affair with publishing this little magazine and
sometimes they go by wayside.
So having said all that, I want to point out that we have made a few changes
since the introduction of our new, expanded format. We are truly a combined area
publication now, no sections. We were happy to be able to present three sections in
TODAY as we wanted each community that is part of the
our first issue of
South Santa Clara Valley to feel that they were represented, even though our end
goal is to provide a publication that honors a sense of synergy amongst them. The
sections didn’t accomplish that goal, so from now on, the synergy starts here with
the greater value in the sum of all the communities that make up the South Santa
Clara Valley region.
Some of the cool stuff in this issue includes a great article by my assistant
editor/senior writer, Robin Shepherd about the amazing world of bike enthusiasts
that enjoy the immense variety of biking options afforded them here in
this region. I was amazed to learn of the involvement of Specialized Bicycle
Components in the advancement of the sport in this area. And it always gives me
pause when one of our children finds a way to give back — for Michelle Reuter,
bikes provided the vehicle (pun intended). See her story, page 8.
Downtowns hold a special place in my heart, and in the heart of any
community. I strongly feel that unless a community has a vital downtown,
they have lost their identity. That is why we are always happy to help keep our
communities up to date on all the great things that are happening downtown. See
this issues’ update, page 18.
I’ve known Gene Guglielmo for over 35 years. I know I’m really not that old,
right! Well, suffice to say, I knew him when. It wasn’t until we started publishing
Morgan Hill Today in 2013 that I realized what a community treasure the
Guglielmo Winery is. It is so rich with history and the Guglielmo family story
is truly an American success story — complete with all the hard work, family
involvement and true grit. I commend Gene and his brothers, Greg and George for
providing such an amazing venue — for great wine experiences and events.
Well, that just covers the first twenty-four pages of this issue. I’m out of space,
so I’ll sign off with a heartfelt “ENJOY!”
