Okay ! Enough already ! It has been raining like forever … or so it seems . It wasn ’ t all that long ago that we were worrying about the drought and using too much water . Today , ( as I sit in my office working on this issue of magazine ) Coyote Creek has overflowed and is blocking the north lanes of Highway 101 , Anderson Reservoir is at 102 % capacity , mud slides are threatening homes and blocking streets , and sink holes are gobbling up cars . It is just plain wet everywhere . It ’ s hard to remember what the sun actually looks like . I ’ m hoping by the time you read this that the sun is shinning and our cover ( photo was taken last year ) is not just wishful thinking .
Our new series “ Regionally Speaking ” debuts in this issue with a look at our Infrastructure : Our Streets and Roads ( pages 12-15 ). In future issues we will look at other regional topics that we feel will be of interest to you , our readers . We will also have our community leaders weigh in on the importance of thinking regionally .
In our last issue we highlighted people to watch in 2017 and received many comments mentioning others within our communities that make substantial contributions to our way of life here in the South Santa Clara Valley . Two such people are highlighted in this issue : Gilroy ’ s newest councilman , Dan Harney ( page 28 ) and Morgan Hill ’ s new councilwoman , Caitlin Robinett Jachimowicz ( page 30 ).
Also in our last issue we announced that our new website would be completed and urged our readers to surf our site . Unfortunately , due to all the back-end technical stuff , we weren ’ t able to go live until just recently . See our new features on page 24 . We hope you will spend some time getting familiar with our site as we have some pretty cool features like searchability , electronic magazine versions of all our issues that date back to 2006 with our first issue of Gilroy Today , and People Talking , a blog type section where you can comment on our current content and provide suggestions for future articles .
In closing , I would like to call your attention to our Calendar ( page 10 ) as there are many events happening in the next couple of months and to our Community
Digest section ( pages 32-41 ) that highlights the wonderful work of our nonprofits and acknowledges the work of so many individuals in our region .
