day to tire him out and to alleviate his separation anxiety . If your dog barks at other dogs or people when out on a walk , distract him to refocus on the walk .
Next , if you are traveling with your pet , have paperwork , licenses , and tags with you . Airlines and campgrounds require these . Don ’ t forget any medications , food , and treats . A clean well-groomed pet is always appreciated whether staying in your hotel or a pet motel . Be prepared . Bring a carrier and a doggy bed even if the dog will sleep next to you in a bed . Don ’ t forget the favorite toy !
If you are staying at someone else ’ s house , it is rude to assume that you can bring your pet . Always ask beforehand . Even if your dog is an invited guest , don ’ t take him if he is destructive or if he isn ’ t good with other dogs
that will be there . If he is anxious around new people or a different environment , don ’ t take him . Please respect other peoples ’ homes and don ’ t selfishly take your dog if you know it isn ’ t a good fit . Use a professional pet sitter or facility .
If you are entertaining at home and your guests are clearly anxious or uncomfortable around your pet , put the animal in the other room or outside . Some folks may be allergic , and some may not be used to an overly excited
pet or a large dog . They may even be frightened . If you are having folks over who are new to your home , please inform them beforehand that you have a pet or pets .
Teach basic manners to your dog — sit , stay , heel , down , bed , quiet and my personal pet peeve , no begging at the dinner table . Or try to teach them . I am laughing as I ’ m writing this because my stray Jack Russell Terrier , Bebe , is sometimes “ manners challenged ” when greeting other dogs . Humans are no problem for her .
Well-mannered pets are more pleasant to be around . Well-mannered pet owners are appreciated and respected for managing their pets ’ behavior . Our pets are like family . We want the best for them and for those around us .
