GILROY • MORGAN HILL • SAN MARTIN
Improvements will be conducted in three phases:
Phase 1: Sewer Line Rehabilitation
Sewer line improvements between Monterey Road and
Wayland Lane are anticipated to start in July and will be
completed in approximately four weeks. Construction
will take place nightly Monday through Friday between
6:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Two-way traffic will be maintained
throughout the project.
Phase 2: Water Line Rehabilitation
Once the sewer line rehabilitation is finished, work will be-
gin on the new, larger capacity water line between Monterey
Road and Santa Teresa Boulevard. Work is anticipated to
begin late-summer 2018 and last through summer 2019.
Work is scheduled Monday through Friday between 9:00
AM and 3:00 PM, with limited night work.
During construction, lanes will be reduced on First
Street, so motorists are urged to allow extra time in their
travel schedule and drive safely through the construction
area.
Phase 3: Caltrans Paving Improvements
Once the sewer and water line work have been completed,
final repaving work by Caltrans can begin.

G
ilroy residents will be glad to know the First
Street (State Highway 152) Sewer and Water Line
Improvements Project is set to begin. The historic
thoroughfare will be revamped both above and below the
surface beginning this summer and finishing next year.
As part of an ongoing effort to improve its infrastruc-
ture, the City of Gilroy has initiated the sewer and water
line rehabilitation work. This is a priority project that will
extend the life of the sewer system and increase water util-
ity along First Street.
Despite the road running through the city, First Street
is not a city-owned road as it falls under the jurisdiction of
Caltrans as part of State Highway 152. Gilroy city officials
are excited about moving forward on these projects and
working with Caltrans on the road resurfacing.
The improvements include rehabilitation of the aging
sewer, including 11 manholes, the construction of new
water mains, valves, fire service laterals and fire hydrants.
Since this entails roadway construction on sections of First
Street, it’s necessary to complete this vital infrastructure
repair before Caltrans begins its paving work After the
completion of this work, Caltrans will proceed with the
Pavement Improvement Project along First Street, from
west of Santa Teresa Boulevard to Route 101.
“The City is committed to completing this work quick-
ly, ef ficiently and safely. Your patience and understanding
is appreciated. We look forward to sharing information
with our residents and business community as the proj-
ect progresses,” said Girum Awoke, City of Gilroy Public
Works Director.
