All the way down, near the corner of 10th and Monterey,
Streets, at 7050 Monterey Street, the all-natural Sumanos
Bakery from Watsonville will be opening a production and
distribution center. And at the corner of 6th and Monterey
Streets, the Halls building is being transformed into a
restaurant with several apartments upstairs. Currently they
are waiting for an expansion of the PG&E service after which
the project should progress quickly. Rumor has it that Garlic
City Café will be moving into these larger digs. And just up
the street a ways, Promised Land Brewing Company is set to
open soon in the historic Pirelli Building.
Overall, there a lot of new and exciting things happening
in Gilroy’s downtown. The Gilroy Downtown Business
Association (GDBA) is moving ahead with the Mainstreet
Program focusing on: Organization, Promotion, Design and
Economic Restructuring. Most of the URM (Unreinforced
Masonry Buildings) issues are resolved or moving towards
resolution. Several key players in the Downtown area are
also looking into a community garbage shed in Gourmet
Alley between 5th and 6th Streets.
New businesses are opening or expanding. More second
floor apartments are becoming available and over 350
affordable housing units are coming on line.
The Gilroy Downtown already has some great
restaurants, shops, services and accommodations and
over of the next few months there will be more. The next
step is for all of us to patronize these restaurants, shops,
services and accommodations!
