with the community of Sri Ram Ashram, founded by Baba Hari Dass, who
also inspired Mount Madonna Center and MMS. They visited the Pardada
Pardadi School founded by Sam Singh and Renuka Gupta, which serves
girls in a very poor rural area east of Delhi; and engaged in a peer work-
shop in one of India’s finest schools, Step by Step, in Noida.
To prepare, the students are counseled to leave expectations at home
and simply allow the experience to happen as it does. They learn what-
ever they are ready to learn and the unpredictability is part of the “secret
sauce.” In doing so, they met memorable people at all levels of this
incredibly diverse society and learned a great deal about themselves in the
process.
This biannual learning journey is part of MMS’ Values in World Thought
program, a two-year social studies curriculum for high school students.
MMS is a nonsectarian, independent preschool through grade 12 school.
Mount Madonna School (MMS) will host a public presentation featur-
ing its senior class discussing their recent experiences in India, Friday,
April 19 at 9am.
On March 25, the Mount Madonna School (MMS) 12th grade class
headed to India for a two-week service-learning journey. The day after
arriving in Delhi, they departed for Dharamshala to meet and speak
with the Dalai Lama, an almost unimaginable privilege. It has been six
years since an MMS group has met with him. The students are always
smitten with his infectious good humor and kindness. The students
also met with other remarkable people, including Rinchen Khando
Choegyal, founder of the Tibetan Nuns Project, Dr. Kshama Metre,
director of CORD (Chinmaya Organization for Rural Development), and
poet-activist Kamla Bhasin.
Just as importantly, the students spent several days interacting
