masonry (URM) buildings, and thus requiring structural improvements for public safety. Many buildings and store fronts were left vacant during the safety upgrade process and the overall vibe and energy in down- town languished. In recent years, with support of City Council and the help of our concerned residents, dedicated property owners, and determined business community, downtown Gilroy is once again seeing a swell of economic development activity. Thanks to the commitment of our downtown property owners, where 35 URM buildings were originally identified in the heart of down- town, there are now only eight. Of those eight, five are scheduled for completion of upgrades within the year. And with more build- ings and spaces available, Gilroy’s downtown appeal is on the rise. Four new businesses have recently opened including Golden State Brewery, Ivori, Capos, and Promised Land Brewery. At least seven more new tenants are preparing to join the downtown including bakeries, breweries, restaurants and more. Thanks to the dedication of our business community, our downtown also boasts a large array of activities and events throughout the year including parades, wine strolls, side- walk sales, and the summer music series, Downtown Live. So come on over and check out Gilroy’s Historic Downtown Corridor; visit one of our new restaurants, breweries, or businesses and join with members of our community in cel- ebrating Gilroy and the people who make it a great place to live and work.
