Some of our clients at Visiting
Angels credit essential oils for
decreasing anxiety; and
4) There is a suggestion that
the effect of a given scent
depends a lot on any his-
tory you have had with
that scent. In 2004, Estelle
Campenni, PsyD, a professor
of Psychology at Marywood
University, concluded after
her study, that one’s emo-
tional response to essential
oils had more to do with
beliefs than with the oils
themselves. In her study, she
introduced lavender oil as
a calming compound and
neroli as a stimulant. When
she conducted the study, she
switched the labels and inter-
estingly enough, their heart
rates reacted accordingly—
they reacted the way they
thought they should react;

5) Chiropractic practice
was not accepted as a viable
medical treatment in recent
past, but it is now widely
accepted, and essential oils
could be on the list someday.
If you are thinking of
investigating essential oils,
have a discussion with your
doctor. Make sure it won’t
jeopardize your prescription
meds. (One study showed
that peppermint and euca-
lyptus oils may change
the way the body absorbs
a particular cancer drug).
And when you are ready to
look into it, do your due
diligence. “Sniff” out the bad
products and work with a
reputable source. Remember
that you get what you pay

for, and be careful of oils that
are cheap. Think about it, it
takes 200 lbs. of lavender to
come up with one pound of
essential oil—if it is cheap,
what are you getting? I don’t
know about you but I am
going to check out lavender
to see if it helps our team
handle the usual unexpected
Monday crises with no
anxiety…or maybe pepper-
mint to see if it helps give
me vitality! Will scents make
sense for you?
