A New Century of Education
his year, Gavilan Community
College celebrates its 100 th
anniversary as an engine of
higher education that now serves college students across
southern Santa Clara and San Benito counties.
Gavilan is marking its centennial year by showcasing its
rich history while boldly pursuing its vision for success in
the next century.
A capable, community-minded and welcoming presence
at Gavilan’s helm is Dr. Kathleen Rose. In 2016, Trustees of
Gavilan Joint Community College District named Dr. Rose
as its President and Superintendent. Deep experience and
sincere passion for her work have enabled Rose to step
confidently into the role.

Progress has been steady since Rose took office. In
2017, a new Educational Master Plan was adopted,
followed by a Facilities Master Plan in 2018. The sound-
ness of these plans is enhanced by their strong linkages.
Every element of facility design, new construction,
and renovation in the Facilities Master Plan supports
corresponding educational goals and requirements as
defined in the Educational Master Plan.
“The overarching work of the State of California is to
make community colleges the launchpad for all things
higher ed, career and technology ed, noncredit and com-
munity-based education,” Rose said. “Our on-campus and
online environments need to provide creative and produc-
tive settings for all of our programs for all of our students.”
