Central Plant and Infrastructure —These projects will
renovate and upgrade the aging utility systems on campus.
2 Library/Learning Resource Center —The planned two-
story facility will include 70,000 square feet of classroom, lab,
study/tutoring and multi-media spaces, and a common area
where students can gather to enjoy a meal, collaborate, and
socialize.
According to Denée Pescarmona, VP of Academic Affairs
at Gavilan, “Teaching, studying and learning methods, and
supporting technology, are all evolving. We want to bring
all the stakeholders together, including faculty and advisory
committees, and run focus groups to look at capacity and
the programmatic mix. We’re looking at Stanford and other
modern libraries and applying principles of design thinking
to imagine and build a library for the future.”
3 Site Improvements and Security—Improvements are
planned for the Central Quad, bridges, accessibility solutions,
signage and wayfinding. Security projects include cameras, a
public address system and door hardware.

STEM Center—A new 26,000 square foot STEM Center
will be located adjacent to the science buildings and include
classrooms, science and computer labs, study areas and offices
for faculty and staff support.
A federal STEM grant funds partnerships that connect
Gavilan students with professors at UC Santa Cruz, San Jose
State University and UC San Francisco to study with them
and advance their research.
“STEM jobs require a minimum of an Associate’s degree or
higher,” Pescarmona said. “A chronic shortage of skilled U.S.
workers in sectors such as high tech is driving demand at
community colleges and all levels of education. These partner-
ships prepare our students to transfer to four-year programs.”

Visual and Performing Arts Complex —The new
53,000-square-foot complex will house Gavilan’s theater,
music and art programs. In addition to a state-of-the-art
theater, it will include classrooms, a set design shop, rehearsal
rooms, art and music labs, a kiln yard, faculty and support
staff offices, and storage for props and equipment.
