GILROY ROTARY
SOFTBALL SCHOLARSHIP CLASSIC
The Gilroy Rotary Club held its Inaugural Softball Scholarship Classic this past
October at Christmas Hill Park. Local celebrities faced off with Gilroy's fi nest —First
Responders.
In a surprising upset, our “Gilroy celebrities“ defeated the local first responders
team 12-8. It was a good-natured rivalry, with both teams enjoying the fun “Ring a
bell for a ringer,“ where your team could donate money to the cause and have one of
the Gavilan College championship women’s softball players “ring in“ and bat for you.
Gavilan College provided all of the equipment plus coaching and players to help get
our volunteers ready.
The game announcers, local fun favorites Sam Bozzo and Gene Sakahara, kept
the announcing lively. The crowd enjoyed the national anthem sung by the Gilroy
High School chamber ensemble, and rousing support was provided by the Christopher
High School and Gilroy High School cheerleading teams.
Thanks to our generous sponsors, who sponsored the team, shirts, and raffle
prizes, $2500 was raised to support local scholarships! It was a perfect fall day, and
Gilroy Rotary Club looks forward to making this a tradition!
REBUILDING SILICON VALLEY
VETERAN GETS SAFETY LIFT
David is 96 years old and lives with his 68 year-old son in the
Gilroy home Dave purchased in 1996 — both are Veterans.
David served in WWII and his son served in the Vietnam War.
When David found, due to frequent visits to the hospital after
a number of bad falls, that he was unable to navigate the
steps into his home and was unable to afford the expense of a
wheelchair lift, Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley stepped in
and installed one.
Rebuilding Together is the leading national non-profit
organization with a mission to repair the homes of people in
need and revitalize our communities. If you know of a Santa
Clara County homeowner who is unable to make critical
home repairs, contact Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley at
408.578.9519 or go to rtsv.org.
