She is the former division assistant of Gavilan College ’ s DRC ( now AEC ) where she supported students and veterans with learning differences and disabilities . While there , she earned a liberal arts degree and entered SJSU ’ s Social Science Teacher Prep program .
After completion of her undergraduate studies , a diagnosis of Lupus put education on hold . for local non-profits during their summer project “ Gilroy cLOVE Days ”
Janet envisions a community task force where all residents are valued and have a voice . “ Each group may have their own needs and goals , but every group needs to help each other realize those goals . What impacts one area of town impacts all because we are one community .” She says . Janet is also active in Lupus awareness and hopes to help others navigate the diagnosis through advocacy and by chronicling her experiences in a future blog .
Janet and her husband of 27 years , Jason , have two children — Caitlyn , 26 , and Kevin , 22 . The fourth generation Gilroyan is proud of her family ’ s heritage that reaches back to the early 1900 ’ s . She points out that her great-greatgrandfather was the local carriage driver . Janet is an avid reader and self-described foodie . She loves good wine , laughter and time with family and friends . Her biggest passion is helping others . She credits her great-grandmother , Francis Howson , for instilling a pride in community and a joy of giving back throughout the generations of family . These are the same traits Janet instills in others by her example , and why she is a person to watch in 2021 .
