Over 40 years of Festival memories coming soon !
“ I see trees of green , red roses too . I see them bloom for me and you . And I think to myself , what a wonderful world .” So begins the Louis Armstrong song that has inspired generations . To think it almost never happened .
It was 1967 . The country was divided and in turmoil . At 66 with failing health , Armstrong was in his twilight years . After a late-night performance , he entered the studio at 2am . A record label executive – opposed to the song , disrupted the recording several times . They locked him out . Several more takes were aborted due to the whistles of nearby trains . Upon the record ’ s completion in spring of ‘ 68 , the same executive blocked its release in the US . Just a year before his death in 1970 , Armstrong re-recorded the song for the US market . The rest is history .
As individuals and as a community , we have faced turmoil , tragedy , and hardship . Yet , somehow , we always continue to
 make good happen .
“ I see skies of blue and clouds of white . The bright blessed day , the dark sacred night , and I think to myself what a wonderful world .” Armstrong ’ s song is about hope . It is about seeing the good around us and seeing the good within us . It is about doing our best to bring about good . We are inspired by so many in the South County who live these sentiments every day , helping to build our community and improve the lives of others .
As the new publishers of gmhTODAY , we follow in the footsteps of giants like Satchmo himself . We choose to focus on the good . We are honored to share the stories of great people doing great things . In every issue , we hope to remind others how great it is to live , work and play in the South County . Speaking of giants , we are grateful to stand on the shoulders of J . Chris and Larry Mickartz , who have entrusted us to continue their legacy , and consider us worthy of the task . We stand on the shoulders of our parents – whose highest purpose was to make our lives better . We are blessed to have Cecilia and Tony Garza , Sylvia Guajardo , and Ed Sanchez as readers ! We thank our family , friends and neighbors who continue to encourage and inspire us every day .
We wish you health , happiness , and success in 2021 . Be resilient and always remember … it ’ s a wonderful world . Oh yeah ….
