Firman B . Voorhies Volunteer of the Year : Jorge Mendoza - A graduate of the Institute for Leadership in Ministry , Diocese of San Jose , Jorge Mendoza has been a leader in Gilroy since 1994 . His volunteer work for the community includes his participation in St . Mary ’ s Parish , Services Immigrant Rights , Education Network , People Acting Together in Community and the PICO National Network , organizations striving for social justice and advocating for human and immigrant rights . Mendoza ’ s dedication to the betterment of his community and its members is evident in the integral role he ’ s played in co-founding San Ysidro Nueva Vida , transforming the local east Gilroy park from a gang hangout to a family center . He ’ s also an active member of the coordinating team for various youth groups and has served on the Hispanic Council and Pastoral Council , and founded the Virgin of Juquila Community Celebration and the Virgin of Guadalupe Celebration .
Young Professional of the Year : Carlos Pineda - Although Chef Carlos Pineda has worked at his craft in restaurants in Monterey , Carmel , and Los Angeles , the native Gilroyian feels a true sense of fulfillment in the role he plays at Rebekah Children ’ s Services , an organization that serves disenfranchised youth ages 15-25 . His input in the development of the Culinary Academy at Rebekah ’ s was invaluable . Since its conception in 2010 , Chef Carlos has worked with 1500 students who have completed the program and successfully moved on in their careers . Chef is currently pursuing a degree in Psychology which he feels will enable him to better serve his students and his community . His motto is , “ educate , inspire and lead .” Chef believes that by education , inspiring and leading future generations , we can empower them to advocate for themselves and become resources for their communities .
Susan Valenta Youth Leadership Award : Danielle Russell - A famous quote by L . M . Montgomery , “ Everything worth having is some trouble ,” has served as Danielle Russell ’ s motivation . A recipient of two national student scholarships in 2019 to the Lincoln Forum in Gettysburg , Pennsylvania , Danielle ’ s visit there solidified her plan for college . This fall she will attend Gettysburg College majoring in history with minors in Civil War Era Studies , museum studies , and public history . Her goal is to become a professor of American history , with a concentration on Civil War Era Studies . In this role she hopes to preserve memories of those who served our nation . Danielle ’ s passion for history began in fifth grade and has never waned . Learning the history of her ancestors she was inspired to preserve the lives and memories of other veterans so none would ever be forgotten .
