On the Cover

An industrious spring bee makes a special appearance while we captured this image of the raised bed gardens at Saint Louise Regional Hosptial , reminding us that Spring is here and its time to get busy !
In 1972 I was nine . Life was great … until June , when our house melted . The only AC we had was “ alternating current .” Mom was raising five kids on her own and working full time . We survived on the tips she made as a waitress .
Deb started her June days before the sun , doing chores and caring for her animals . Her parents worked hard and played hard . At seven , she kept pace . Her days were harder than mine . At least I slept in .
Miles apart and years away from the story of us , we shared one thing — KFRC in San Francisco , the Top Ten AM station responsible for the soundtrack of our lives . “ I Can See Clearly ” by Johnny Nash hit the airwaves mid-month . It played in heavy rotation … as in every hour , every day , for months . The Reggae beat is catchy , and the message is simple : Somehow , everything will be okay .
For us , the song evokes disparate memories , yet similar emotions . Deb remembers hearing the song while watching white billowy clouds float across a crystal blue sky , lying across the front seat in the family car — no seatbelts required — heading home from a day at the county fair . She was safe , secure , and above all else , happy . I remember watching my mom tapping the steering wheel in perfect time , prayerfully singing along . Determined to manifest the message into reality , she unintentionally provided a nineyear old kid with his first real-life hero . I remember watching her — feeling safe , secure , and above all else , happy .
As kids , we had it good and bad ; enough bad to build character , and enough good to get us on our way . Deb ’ s parents had it made ; she was a good kid . All I can say is “ sorry , Mom ”
Raising kids isn ’ t easy . Add in a global pandemic ? That ’ s more than enough bad to build plenty of character . Rest assured parents — you ’ ve given your kids enough good to get them on their way . C . S . Lewis said , “ Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny .” Today ’ s kids are now prepared to find theirs .
RCS Kids “ Share Your Love ” campaign matches families with kids needing a little more good in their lives to get them on their way to realizing their destiny . If you have any to give , it would be well placed here . We know good changes lives for good , and all extraordinary journeys begin by believing : Somehow , everything will be okay .
