I will never forget my first tour of the County animal shelter in San Martin when I was a newly elected County Supervisor .
It wasn ’ t my first time in the animal shelter , but it was the first time the facility was my responsibility as a County policymaker . I saw a 70-year-old building that was bursting at the seams , held together only by the benevolent willpower of the staff and volunteers . I vowed then and there that we would build a new facility . This is why I am especially proud to announce that after years of planning and building , our new Animal Services Center in San Martin is complete .
The County of Santa Clara Animal Services Center is an open-intake shelter that accepts every stray and abandoned animal in the service area , from Stanford to Gilroy – nearly 4,000 of them annually . It is where lost pets are reunited with their families ; where animals are adopted into loving fur-ever homes ; where sick and injured animals are cared for ; and where pet overpopulation is managed through affordable spay and neuter services . The Animal Services Center is also where complaints of cruelty and neglect are investigated , and livestock and injured wildlife are cared for . During disasters , the Animal Care and Control staff partner to save animal lives , enriching human lives in the process . Four-legged , feathered , hooved , horned — none are turned away , proudly stands as a “ no-kill ” shelter since 2013 .
This new building is one of the most advanced public animal care facilities in the country — expanding the footprint , supporting modern shelter standards designed to keep animals happy and healthy , creating a better environment and a better experience for adopters , volunteers , staff and visitors .
Located at 12425 Monterey Highway in San Martin , the 37,000 square foot facility includes :
• Modern dog dorms that allow dogs indoor and outdoor access .
• An open air outside park for dogs to interact with potential forever owners .
• Free-roam cat condos with climbing structures .
• A 10-stall barn and pasture .
• Two surgical clinics to service our growing animal population .
• A community space for up to 300 people at a time .
