Many stories were shared by childhood and long-time friends , colleagues , and family members . They ranged from hilarious to somber . A former teammate shared that in Jr . High opposing teams were terrified when they saw Rich on the sidelines , thinking he was a grown man because he had a full beard . Another friend shared that his last conversation with Rich was to let him know about a recent diagnosis of cancer . He vowed to fight and shared he knew Rich was pulling for him . Al Firato , Rich ’ s older brother , shared that Rich has always lived life to the fullest — along with stories only a brother can share .

Rich was a go-cart and stock car racer , an actor ( His movie “ Scars Run Deep ” premiers October 10 ), and a proud Italian American . According to son Nick , he was the best dad he could ever hope for .
“ He was larger than life , a dreamer , a connector , strong endearing , kind , compassionate . He taught me how to be a leader , how to be a father , a husband . He provided for his family and gave his time and energy to the community .”
Local crooner and friend of Rich , Ted Sanchez performed “ Unforgettable ,” “ Beyond the Sea ,” and “ My Way ” and shared his memories during the ceremony . He shared they met as the Music Series was just getting off the ground . No one thought of lights for the first evening concert . Ted hurried back to Gilroy to grab a couple of his lights , returned and got them set up “ enough to see the legs of the band performing once it got dark .” They remained friends ever since .
Nick shared that his dad was “ the embodiment of the American dream — a family man , entrepreneur , community leader , and absolute legend .” He noted that everything Rich built was with purpose and passion . “ He was one of a kind . I Always knew how lucky I was to call him friend , leader , and dad . He ended with “ His ceiling is the floor I stand on .”
To end the celebration , the band Entourage played as friends and family danced . It was the perfect way to end the celebration remembering a man who was larger than life , a friend to everyone , and a benevolent pirate to a grateful community .
His legacy will continue . His family and friends will make sure it does . Rich Firato left us a treasure chest of goodwill , kindness , friendship , and so much more .
“ Not all treasure is silver and gold .” Rich ' s impact and contributions to the community , his efforts to improve everything he touched , his natural ability to make everyone he encountered feel connected , valued , and capable of more than they realized possible , and his devotion to his family are just some of the clues he left for all of us to follow . The treasure chest he left us may be elusive at times , but it is not hidden . It is there for all who dare to open it . When we do , we will see — or be reminded — that the most precious of all treasures is a life well lived .
Sail on , Rich . May the Good Lord bless you with fair winds and following seas — and lead you to ever brighter shores .
