Fall is upon us !

This is usually the time when we start to see signs of the seasons changing . So far , few to no changes are evident . Instead , it seems like we are having an extended summer ! Temps have been hitting triple digits lately , and our nights are not cooling down as usual .

While this extended summer continues , please be mindful of your surroundings . Hot surfaces like sidewalks and outdoor seating , car seats and door handles , even tools and containers that have been sitting in the sun can be hazardous . If in the direct sun , wear a hat and cover up in peak heat times . Make sure little ones and our furry friends aren ’ t caught barefoot on hot surfaces . Sandals or shoes for the kiddos , and doggy-paws or booties for the furry ones ! As certain as the seasons change ( pun intended ), Fall will be here soon . When it comes , there will be lots to be mindful of :

Keep an eye out for little kiddos running across streets this October 31st . Nightfall is coming earlier — with the official “ Fall back ” happening on Sunday November 3rd . However , just in time for trick or treating , we ’ ll start to see shadows and dark skies by 5-6pm soon . So be on the lookout !

Fall brings with it the holiday season . Many of our neighbors are struggling to get by . With colder weather comes higher heating bills , more clothes needing to be purchased to stay warm , and a need for basics like socks , sweaters , gloves and beanies . If you have any used clothing or blankets in good shape , please consider donating to a local charity so they can be used by our neighbors who need them .

Elections are upon us : local , regional , state , and federal . Let ’ s be mindful that our elected officials are supposed to work for us — all of us . Also , let ’ s keep our cool and agree to agree , or disagree , over things we really have little to no control over . Our infighting is just what the doctor ordered . As long as we ’ re distracted those in charge will continue to win the long game — and nothing gets better .

Nationally , God bless us and help our votes count ! Locally , we have more of a chance to impact the elections and who we choose to represent us as we move into the future . It is incumbent upon us all as voters to get to know who is running for local office , listen to their vision and plans , ask questions and make our voices heard . Then , after you know the candidates and understand the issues , make your most intelligent choice . Locally our votes do matter , so don ’ t let anyone make your mind up for you . Let your voice be heard . Our collective future is entirely up to us .

Like I ’ ve stated here before , we ’ ve got it good here . But we need to work to keep it that way and keep improving where we can or must . Together at the polls this year , and every day in our South County ... Let ' s go make history .
