J udy and Sam Bozzo hosted our Matisse Inspired Workshop in
their backyard. Mayor Greg Bozzo and his children Olivia, Gianna and Jonathan and their cousin Dominic Bozzo joined in and it became a Fun Family Art Experience!
I love to teach an art project based on a famous artist. This project is inspired by French artist Henri Matisse who was known for his bright colors and patterns. After he was hospitalized in 1941 with cancer Matisse changed his style of painting to a“ cut-out” technique as he could no longer stand and paint. He called it“ painting with scissors”.
His simple, flat shapes influenced graphic design, and his bold colors brought the dull, dark painting era to a bright new way to create.
This art project requires simple supplies and is suitable for any age. It’ s perfect for a family to enjoy together. To start, I showed the young artists examples of Matisse’ s cut out finished work. I asked them which work appealed to them and they all were inspired by either color, shapes or subject matter. They took their inspiration from Matisse and individually decided what they would do to make their art original and different— their very own.
They selected the colored construction paper they wanted to use and began planning how they would cut shapes to create their own artwork.
