CREATING PAPER BAG PUPPETS
Now Let ’ s Get Started !
Set up your area by laying a cloth over a table . Prepare two containers of water — one for rinsing off brushes , one clean . Add drops of water to any hard watercolor cakes to soften before using . Use big , soft , brushes . Cut up an old sponge to use for stamping and blotting off excess watercolor .

( Opposite page 2nd from left ) Draw faces with crayon on paper plates — be sure to color hard ! Color lots of plates with different expressions . Use paper instead of styrofoam plates . Talk about each emotion your children are drawing . You can say , “ Smiles go up and frowns go down .” Look at each other and make expressions with your faces and say ,“ Show me your scared face , your happy face , a sad face , etc .” Talk , praise their work and listen to what your child says !

( Below Third from left ) Dip brush in a little water , then in paint and paint over crayon on paper plate . If there is too much water on the plate , blot off excess with a sponge and let dry . Paint all the plates at once using different colors and combinations . Lay on newspaper to dry . Talk about the colors they pick … ask “ Which ones make you feel happy , sad , etc .”

( Below 2nd from right ) Put a color on the tray of watercolors . Dip a cut sponge into color and stamp over the color crayon face . The sponge may be easier if the child has trouble holding a brush .

( Below right ) When your child gets excited — praise them !… Say , ” Look at all the faces you made !” “ You did a great job !” “ I ’ m happy and excited , too !” If you name your own emotions , your child can connect the word to what they are feeling .
Let ’ s decorate !
When dry , cut paper plates in half . Glue half faces to the folded side of paper bags to make a mouth . Decorate the face by gluing on google eyes , pom pom noses , felt scraps , stickers or glitter glue — use your imagination to decorate ! Paint and decorate the paper bag body too .
