Tips for Stenciling : Tape the stencil down and mask off areas you don ’ t want to get paint on . Use acrylic straight out of the tube . DO NOT ADD WATER … this will make the paint run under the stencil . Use a flat stencil brush and tap the color into the stencil openings making sure to pound into fabric . Let dry and remove stencil to reveal lettering or image .
EASY and SUPER FUN !
Step # 3 : Alma selects flower , Ava pounds flower under parchment , and Kylie decides what color flower to pound next .
If you are going to wash your fabric a lot ( like a T-shirt ), soak fabric in Alum first . Alum is available in spice isle of your grocery store . Use one gallon of lukewarm water to 2 TBS of Alum , soak fabric 30 minutes and let dry . This will let your fabric receive and retain the natural colors better . Since we are not going to wash the tote bags that often I did not prep the totes with Alum .
Step # 5 : Alma looks on as Ava and Kylie remove pounded flowers revealing the vibrant print .
In all cases , after printing your flowers , heat will set the dye . I use house hold aluminum foil like Reynolds Wrap placed on top of the dyed fabric on the ironing board , and iron to set the dye .
Step # 4 : Alma and Ava are surprised by the print a large iris makes on the back of Ava ’ s tote bag .
Step # 6 : BEAUTIFUL results ! Kylie ’ s bag on the right is just the stencil process . The other three bags are stencil and pounded flowers .
Alma , Ava & Kylie you did an AMAZING JOB !
