These students came to the event for a variety of reasons , but all with the same contagious level of enthusiasm . Cheyene Comancho , 17 , from Christopher High School , and Christopher , 15 , from Live Oak High School , were both excited to sample the fun diner-style food . The bar-turnedsoda-shop served cold drinks , including root beer or Coca-cola floats . Hostess goodies were served for dessert .

According to Francesca Bravo , 15 , from Morgan Hill , and Melissa Chavez , 21 , from Gilroy , they were “ most excited for the dancing .”
Jesus Corza , 18 , from Gilroy , was “ looking forward to doing the dance from Grease ,” which he watched and practiced ahead of time . His family joined him for the evening , including his uncle Robert “ The Ghost ” Guerrero , who brought his classic car for the car show .
The students moved , grooved , and let loose . The cheerleaders danced right along with them , bringing positive energy . At seven o ’ clock , the crowd cheered loudly when the San Jose Sharks ’ mascot Sharkie arrived . Sharkie rocked and rolled with the students and moved around the room . After a whirlwind of photo ops and a dance to “ Baby Shark ,” he departed . Then the music shifted into the 80s with “ Thriller ” by Michael Jackson , recharging the students who danced to other crowd-favorites , including “ YMCA ” and “ The Chicken Dance .”
Joy was another theme for this evening , and it showed on everyone ’ s faces . Irene Castillo came with her son , Nikolas Castaneda , 18 , from Hollister and said , “ It ’ s amazing what they do for the kids ; they can have a good time and be themselves .” Each student , family member , cheerleader , and volunteer felt the happiness that came from an event that offered good , clean , 50s-style fun , especially after COVID-19 .
Linda Estill was first inspired to coordinate this event when she read about a similar one in Utah . Having an autistic grandson , this special event for those with disabilities struck close to home , and the idea was born . “ Choosing to do this event was the best decision I ever made ,” Estill said , “ It ’ s so rewarding .”
With a dedicated planning committee , over twenty-five volunteers , and a generous group of donors and other supporters , Estill said , “ I ’ m so grateful to our community and how they all come together for this ; it makes the kids feel included . They deserve it !” If you are interested in volunteering for this event please contact Linda Estill at festive @ garlic . com or visit the Facebook page : www . facebook . com / shiningstarprom .
