He described the past three years at Wheeler as full of comradery, exercise, and the excitement of teaming up with people then playing against them in the next match. Joe’ s advice to people his age considering playing is simple:“ They should definitely try it! Start off easy. It’ s really designed for all ages the way the game is set up.”
Wheeler Auditorium is a cherished part of Gilroy, contributing to the town’ s rich history and building a sense of community throughout the years. The site of Wheeler Auditorium on Church Street was originally a lumber mill where redwood timber was cut into boards. The Wheeler Center was then founded in 1940 by philanthropist, seed farm businessman, and devoted Gilroy community member, Lin Wheeler.
Wheeler Auditorium was originally built for the National Guard unit, fulfilling their need of larger and better quarters. It was used as an assembly hall, civic center and armory. The streamlined building was developed at a cost of $ 60,000. The historic site lived on as a memorial to Lin Wheeler and his many contributions to the community, including his assistance in developing the Elks Lodge, Wheeler Hospital, and Wheeler Field, as well as his service as president of the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce.
Today, the Wheeler Auditorium facility features a gym, basketball court, dance room, craft room, meeting rooms, and a multi-use area. The historic site serves as a hub for local residents to gather and participate in various community activities, camps, and events, including pickleball.
So if you’ re looking for a new sport, some exercise, and social hour with players ranging in age from their 20s to their 80s, you can pay a daily drop-in fee of $ 10 or purchase a 10-visit punch pass card for $ 80. All you need is a paddle and you’ re ready to play!
