Gilroy Assistance League:
Celebrating 20 Years of Beauty, Community, and Generosity
This year marks a milestone for Gilroy Assistance League as it celebrates the 20th Anniversary of its beloved Home + Garden Tour. A time-honored tradition in South Santa Clara County, this annual event uniquely blended architectural beauty, lush gardens, and community spirit.
Since its inception, the Home + Garden Tour has been more than an opportunity to admire stunning homes and gardens. It serves as a vital fundraiser for Gilroy Assistance League, a nonprofit, dedicated to supporting programs that benefit local youth. As Gilroy Assistance League President Piper Pluckhan shared,“ We are so proud of what this event has accomplished over the last two decades. It has enabled us to grant thousands of dollars to local organizations, including a planned $ 35,000 in 2025! We’ ve seen how it brings people together in a spirit of giving, and it’ s wonderful to witness that year after year.”
What to Expect in 2025
Attendees can look forward to an extraordinary selection of homes that reflect Gilroy ' s diverse styles and personalities. A scenic drive through the western foothills will lead visitors to a picturesque community where a historic home blends seamlessly with modern designs and unique vineyard estates. The tour culminates in an outdoor market showcasing the creations of talented local artisans. Attendees can shop while enjoying beverages and refreshments.
A Legacy of Giving
The journey to the 20th Anniversary was both rewarding and inspiring. One of the key figures in shaping the event, Janice Filice, chaired the first Home Tour in 2005. She recalled that before the tour’ s creation, the League had explored various fundraising avenues but realized that a signature event was needed. In 2004, Janice proposed a tour of local homes, and thus, the first Home and Garden Tour was born.
The inaugural event featured homes in The Forest, where Janice lived. She persuaded three homeowners to open their homes. The premier tour was a grand success and paved the way for future tours.
As Filice fondly remembers,“ Creating something new is rewarding and challenging. But we had a great team! I am so pleased and proud that the Home Tour has withstood the test of time. Let’ s keep up this amazing journey!”
Opening Their Homes
For many homeowners who open their doors for the tour, participating in the event is about giving to a cause that impacts the next generation. One homeowner, Karen LaCorte, described her experience: " I was honored to be asked, but I knew we had to do a few things to get the house and garden ready. We planted flowers, set up tables, and created an inviting atmosphere in every room. We even placed floating islands of tropical flowers in our pool!
The first day went perfectly. However, on the second day, we almost had a disaster when the pool sweep got severely tangled in the floating islands! With the help of friends( and some scuba gear), we got it sorted out just in time! In the end, it was truly a wonderful experience as we knew the proceeds would benefit our community.”
Another homeowner, Karen Christopher, shares,“ Don and I were thrilled to be a part of the 2010 Home Tour. We’ ve hosted many gatherings over the years, so it was an easy decision. Plus, it was a great excuse to do some spring cleaning! During the event, Don wanted to offer everyone a glass of wine, but we were told that wine would be available at the last stop. So, instead, we sent guests home with a bulb of Gilroy’ s finest garlic from Christopher Ranch! What touched us was seeing the impact of the event ' s proceeds at the Annual Grants Luncheon. It was‘ giving where you live’ in action.'"
The Home + Garden Tour is a tradition that continues to inspire, bringing together beauty, community, and generosity. Whether you ' re attending for the first time or have been a loyal supporter for years, the 2025 tour promises to be a celebration like no other, with a rich history and a bright future ahead.
