Wheeler Auditorium: Still Thriving After 86 Years

Celebrating its 86th year of service to the city of Gilroy( 1940 – 2026), the historic Wheeler Civic Auditorium— located in the heart of Gilroy at 250 West Sixth Street— continues to thrive as the hub of many of the city’ s civic and recreational activities. It remains a place where countless community events have taken place and social connections have been forged over the decades.
Originally serving as a National Guard armory and training facility, and later as a city council and administrative office building, it has accommodated a wide variety of activities within its walls: plays, dances, band concerts, wedding receptions, beauty pageants, religious services, memorial services, student science exhibits, community fundraisers, youth sports, recreation and art classes, amateur boxing, martial arts, and various civic club events. Annual traditions like the Christmas bazaar and Kids Discover Arts took root there, while today, pickleball and tai chi classes keep the building active. Its central location made it accessible to the whole community and still provides a strong sense of place today.
Wheeler Auditorium is named for prominent Gilroy resident and philanthropist Lin W. Wheeler. Born in 1868 in Chautauqua County, New York, Wheeler grew up in Nebraska and Wisconsin, leaving home at 17 to prospect for silver across the West. In 1894, he began a career in the seed business with Vaughn’ s Seed Store in Chicago and New York. He migrated to California in 1907 as a sales representative and settled in Gilroy in 1913 after purchasing the A. J. Pieters Seed Company. After buying out his partner, Wheeler renamed the firm the Pieter-Wheeler Seed Company, which served the rapidly expanding agricultural industry in the Santa Clara Valley during the first half of the 20th century and established Wheeler as a prominent local business leader.
