In addition to contributing $ 25,000( equivalent to approximately $ 590,000 today) toward the construction of Wheeler Auditorium, Wheeler’ s philanthropic contributions to Gilroy included funding Wheeler Hospital in 1929( the city’ s first modern hospital), supporting the old Elks Lodge on Monterey Street in 1943, purchasing trucks and equipment for the fire department, and donating personal land for both the Gymkhana Rodeo Grounds( home to Gilroy’ s rodeo from 1929 to 1956) and Wheeler Sports Field.
In the 1930s, Wheeler also permitted members of the local Japanese community to use land adjacent to his seed company to construct a Japanese language and cultural school, providing a dedicated space for youth after public school hours at a time when state laws restricted land ownership for Asian residents. Lin Wheeler and his wife, Leona— fondly known to residents as " Aunt Lee "— passed away following an automobile accident near Stockton in 1944, a profound loss for the Gilroy community.
As part of the City of Gilroy’ s recently developed Civic Center Master Plan, proposals have been evaluated to replace Wheeler Auditorium with a new 42,000-square-foot recreational facility and aquatic center. In response, many residents and historic preservation advocates have voiced support for preserving the Art Deco structure. The draft Environmental Impact Report( EIR) for the project outlines an alternative titled“ Retain Historic Wheeler Auditorium in Place and Redesign the Proposed Project,” which was identified in the study as the environmentally superior option and aligns with feedback gathered during community workshops favoring the auditorium ' s preservation and adaptive reuse.
During the public comment period, the Gilroy Historical Society formally submitted feedback regarding the Master Plan, advocating for the preservation of the building while noting neighborhood infrastructure and traffic considerations. As part of its commentary, the Society suggested exploring alternative sites for the new aquatic and recreational facilities, such as the Gilroy Sports Park on the south end of town. To support long-term preservation, the Society has also prepared a nomination package to place Wheeler Auditorium on the California Register of Historical Resources( CRHR) through the California Office of Historic Preservation( OHP), sharing a copy with the City for review as municipal planning discussions continue.
Prominent seed industry pioneer Lin Walker Wheeler( 1868 – 1944) and his wife, Leona, were among Gilroy’ s most transformative civic leaders and philanthropists. Together, they funded essential community institutions, including Wheeler Auditorium, Wheeler Hospital, the Gymkhana grounds, and municipal fire equipment. Affectionately known as " L. W." and " Aunt Lee," their extraordinary legacy of generosity reshaped Gilroy’ s civic and recreational infrastructure for generations.
