P ersonally, McMullen is delighted by the recent success, even if it puts more pressure on his shoulders.“ It’ s fun. I’ m kind of in a bubble right now to see how all of this is going to play out,” he said. Ever since he coached soccer in Zambia for his undergrad degree, where the children didn’ t have equipment or a field to play on, he has dedicated himself to ensuring kids get the best opportunities in sports. Now, more than ever, he feels a tremendous responsibility to ensure the club provides a quality experience and a level of professionalism that not only reflects well on OV Toros’ reputation, but the city’ s.
No matter how big they may get, OV Toros’ main goal remains the same: to see more kids playing soccer.
“ There’ s a big drop off around 13 or 14 in both girls and boys for soccer,” McMullen explained. He hopes OV Toros’ recent momentum will inspire kids to keep playing through ages 16 and 17 and beyond. The club has even set up two men’ s teams and one women’ s team for post U19 players, so that people still have the opportunity to play soccer even if they don’ t go to college or they move away.
Soccer doesn’ t build character so much as it reveals it. By constantly striving to do right by their players, the families, and the community, OV Toros has shown that they have what it takes to shine. Don’ t be surprised if Morgan Hill becomes the next big stop for soccer.
