The Healing Power of Horses

Inside South County’ s DreamPower Horsemanship

by Gilroy • Morgan Hill TODAY
Just outside the busy communities of Gilroy and Morgan Hill, in the open pastures of San Martin, healing takes a quieter, more grounded form. At DreamPower Horsemanship, horses help people reconnect— with their bodies, their emotions, and their sense of possibility.

Founded in 2002 by Martha McNiel, DreamPower began with one woman, two horses, and a belief in the power of equine-assisted therapy. What started as a small, deeply personal effort has grown into a cornerstone nonprofit serving the South County community.

Today, DreamPower supports hundreds of children, adults, seniors, veterans, and families each year through a wide range of therapeutic and educational programs. Its work is powered by a dedicated volunteer base and a carefully trained therapy herd of riding horses and miniatures, each playing a role in helping clients build confidence, calm, and connection.
DreamPower’ s impact has earned both local and national recognition. The organization was named 2015 Non-Profit of the Year by the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce and is the only PATH International Premier Accredited Center in the South Bay Area. One of its horses, Pete, was even honored as PATH International Therapy Horse of the Year, a rare distinction in the field.
While the accolades matter, the real story unfolds daily— in the arena, the barn, and the quiet moments between horse and human. It’ s there that progress is made, trust is built, and lives are changed.
