Helping to Build a Strong Workforce
Students will be able to train for careers in Hospitality, Unmanned Aerial Systems, HVAC, and Phlebotomy
Gavilan College received nearly $ 1 million from the California Strong Workforce Program to expand Career Technical Education( CTE) programs leading to high demand, high wage jobs. The community can look forward to new training programs in heating, ventilation and air conditioning( HVAC), unmanned aircraft systems( UAS), and hospitality, along with a pilot project in phlebotomy.
“ The funds are tied to metrics that must be met,” said Sherrean Carr, CTE dean,“ and can go up or down based on the metrics and meeting them.” The funding is allocated statewide based on job openings, unemployed adults and CTE full-time equivalent students.

After more than a decade in the planning, Gavilan College ' s long-awaited Coyote Valley Center is now open for business. The first classes began with the start of Spring Semester on January 30, and the South Bay Regional Public Safety Consortium(" The Academy ") moved in two weeks later. The community was invited to tour the facility at an Open House on Valentine ' s Day— coinciding with the February meeting of the Gavilan College Board of Trustees, which was also held at the new location.
The Coyote Valley campus is now the hub for regional public service training through the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium, including police and fire academies. Classrooms are equipped for liberal arts and sciences, career technical education and physical education classes. Spring 2017 offerings includ Pre-Algebra, Communication Studies, and Pilates.
As word gets out and demand grows, a larger selection of classes will be offered. What would you like to see offered at this new and beautiful site? Email your ideas to Jan Bernstein- Chargin, Director Public Information: jbchargin @ gavilan. edu.
