City Beat
Improved Roadway Coming Soon to Downtown
L
ocated in the heart of our town, Gilroy’s historic downtown
is beginning to see a swell of development activity with
new businesses opening to the public and old unreinforced
masonry buildings undergoing the required renovations in
preparation for future occupancy. To support the growing swell of
development, the City is working to improve roadway conditions
on Monterey Road in the downtown corridor and upgrade ADA
ramps. This work is part of wider coordinated efforts by the City
to support and foster a thriving downtown including a recently
approved façade improvement program and a reduction of
permit and inspection fees for the downtown corridor.
The first phase of construction work on Monterey Road will
focus on ADA curb ramps and curb and gutter improvements.
This phase will be followed by pavement improvements including
grind and overlay between 1st and 4th Streets and mirco-
surfacing between 4th and 8th Streets. The project is anticipated
for completion by the end of 2019 and will include new striping
to complete the project.
Businesses in the downtown corridor will remain open
throughout the project and we encourage the community to
come and see what’s new in the downtown! As a City, we will
continue to work closely with businesses in the project area, the
Downtown Business Association, and the Chamber of Commerce
to coordinate the construction efforts and minimize the effects
on businesses.
What to Expect:
Phase 1: Curb Ramps and Curb and Gutter Improvements
No detours are anticipated.
Minimal disruption to traffi c.
Pedestrian detours will be in place.
Phase 2: Paving and Utilities 1st Street – 4th Street
Access to driveways maintained during regular business hours.
No parking allowed on either side of Monterey Road between
1st Street and 4th Street. One lane in each direction on Monterey
Road will be maintained at all times during day-time construction.
Part of this work may occur at night.
Phase 3: Micro-Surfacing 4th Street – 8th Street
Full road closure at night for the duration of this phase.
Detours are anticipated.
Phase 4: Striping and Project Completion
Minimal disruption.
We recognize that construction can be disruptive, but the benefi ts to the downtown will be worth it.
The City is committed to completing this work quickly, effi ciently, and safely.
We appreciate your patience and understanding.
