W 11 , Korean War Veteran Edward Sanchez makes the perfect Grand Marshal .
“ Eddie does everything from the heart , not for glory ,” said parade committee member Jesse Sanchez , who also happens to be the Grand Marshal ’ s nephew . At 90 years old , Eddie Sanchez has lived a life of service to his country and community .
A Gilroy High Graduate and Jazz musician , Sanchez enlisted into the United States Air Force and was sworn into service on July 4th , 1952 , in Fresno CA . After attending basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio TX ., Sanchez was assigned to Oklahoma A & M University in Stillwater OK for Clerk Typist training .
His first deployment was with the Military Air Transport System ( MATS ) at Hickam Air Force Base ( Now Joint Base Pearl Harbor ), in Honolulu , on the island of Oahu , Hawaii . His second deployment was to Johnston Island , established as " Johnston Island Naval Defensive Sea Area " by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt ’ s executive order 8682 to create US
