Gilroy is the best-kept secret in Silicon Valley , surrounded by natural beauty and nestled between the Santa Cruz and Diablo Mountains . We enjoy sweeping views of farm fields , take pride in our urban forest , and relish easy access to parks , bike paths , and play spaces . We are one of the last communities in Silicon Valley to still have the benefit of a small-town feel with tree-lined streets and natural open spaces .
The fact is , Gilroy is gorgeous . And we need your help to keep it that way .
Over recent years we ’ ve seen an increase in littering and illegal dumping , including garbage left in parks , couches dumped on the side of the road , and other various items strewn throughout our town . To help fight against this , we ’ re organizing clean-ups , revitalizing the Adopt-A-Spot program , and compiling a list of resources for disposing of unwanted items . Bulky Items : Recology customers get two bulk pick-ups a year , curbside at no charge . Alternatively , Recology customers can schedule a free pick-up of up to twelve 32-gallon bags instead of a bulky item . To schedule a curbside pickup , call Recology at 408-842-3358 . Residents can also dispose of bulky items at the San Martin Transfer Station . Drop-off fees may apply .
The Santa Clara County HHW disposal facility in San Martin is available for hazardous material / waste drop-offs by appointment . Call 408-299-7300 to schedule an appointment or visit www . HHW . org .
Electronic Recycling : Electronic waste , including computer monitors and towers , TVs , and cell phones , contain toxins and is not permitted in your garbage or recycling container . To find approved e-waste drop-off locations , visit : www2 . CalRecycle . ca . gov / Electronics .
Composting : Items such as food scraps , pizza boxes , and yard trimmings can be composted , providing nutrient-dense soil and decreasing waste in landfills . Compostable items can be placed in the green organics cart provided by Recology . Please avoid using plastic bags to transfer or collect food waste , which can contaminate and harm the environment .
Recycling : Items such as paper , bottles , aluminum , jars , cans , and plastic containers # 1-7 can be recycled . Recyclable items can be placed in the blue recycling cart provided by Recology . Please avoid using plastic bags to transfer or collect recyclable items .
Mattresses : Recycle your old mattress at our local collection site : Rosso Furniture , at 212 Tennant Avenue in Morgan Hill . Gilroy residents can drop off mattresses , free of charge , for recycling on Wednesdays and Fridays from noon to 4 PM . Alternatively , Recology customers can schedule a curbside bulky item pickup by calling 408-842-3358 .
Hazardous Waste : Hazardous waste , including oils , paints , garden chemicals , batteries , and LED light bulbs , is not permitted in your garbage or recycling container and should be disposed of through the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste ( HHW ) disposal program .
