Pomodoro Technique : Work in 25-minute increments , taking 5-10 minute breaks in between each study session . This technique can be used among other memorization or mechanical methods . This method allows maximized focus while eliminating burnout , leading to more productive study sessions .
Active Recall : This method works great for memorizing definitions and formulas . First , take notes on or review the subject or topic being focused on — this can be done by simply writing down the information , or using flashcards for further memorization . Then , review the notes multiple times , creating questions that can help recall the material . Last , put the notes away and attempt to use the questions to recall as much information as possible . This allows students to cement any concepts or ideas that need to be ingrained in their brain !
Goal Setting
A new academic year can introduce new opportunities and goals , and while it is great to have high expectations , organizing goals can help maximize time and ensure students complete as much as possible ! Now that several weeks have passed and students are busier than ever , there are a few different goal-setting methods that can be helpful and effective in helping the student achieve more in less time .
SMART Goals : Standing for Specific , Measurable , Achievable , Relevant , and Time-bound . This form of goal setting provides a specific outline of what needs to be achieved , while ensuring effective and focused time spent completing smaller goals as the student works toward larger ones . This method is great for short-term goals , allowing you to create reasonable goals based on current circumstances . When setting a shortterm goal , ask yourself : “ Is it specific ? Measurable , achievable , relevant , and time-bound ?”
WOOP Goals : Standing for Wish , Outcome , Obstacle , and Plan . This method is good for long-and short-term goals , and many people use it for personal and academic reasons . First , look at all of your wishes . Realize they are achievable . They do not simply have to be “ hopes .” Consider : How can you make your wishes happen in reality ? Then , visualize the outcome . What could the result be if you make that wish come true ? Next , think about the potential challenges . What might you have to overcome if you pursue this goal ? Then , think of solutions to these problems . How could you avoid these obstacles or come up with solutions ? Last , create a plan to achieve your goals , keeping all of the other factors in mind .
By implementing methods to lighten the load and manage differing amounts of stress , students can create or refine their strategic plan to achieve their long and short-term goals . Making slight adjustments now will help both students and parents stay on track throughout the rest of the school year , and produce much success at the end of the year . Whether by setting SMART goals or exploring new study methods , finding the tools and techniques to best fit the student ’ s learning strengths and lifestyle is a great way to find success and achieve a great deal of satisfaction now and for the remainder of the school year . Best wishes and happy learning !
